Start with what is known

A practical guide for a more complete moving request.

Move-out is easier to plan when the building or dorm instructions, item list, timing, and pickup destination are collected in one place. This checklist is designed for students and families who need to prepare a moving request without assuming a specific service, schedule, price, storage arrangement, or booking.

Step-by-step checklist

  1. 01

    Read the move-out instructions first

Keep the dorm, residence hall, apartment, or building instructions in the same place. Note the required move-out date, checkout process, elevator or loading directions, reservation rules, parking guidance, and the contact who can answer building questions.

  2. 02

Decide what travels, what stays, and what needs a question

Sort essentials, furniture, electronics, boxes, fragile pieces, donations, and items that may need temporary storage coordination. If a storage decision is not settled, record the date gap and the information still needed rather than assuming availability.

  3. 03

    Build a useful inventory

List or select the actual items that will move: beds, desks, chairs, dressers, mini-fridges, televisions, bicycles, boxes, and unusual or fragile belongings. Measure or describe oversized items and add optional photos only when they clarify the request.

  4. 04

    Plan the two addresses

Record the dorm or apartment pickup address and the destination. Add floor, elevator, stairs, entry, hallway, loading, parking, moving-window, and access-contact information separately for both locations.

  5. 05

    Check documentation and time windows

If the building provides a Certificate of Insurance or other moving-document instruction, keep the wording available for review. A quote-form selection does not approve documents or reserve an elevator; final requirements must be confirmed with the moving scope.

  6. 06

Send the request early enough for a review

Provide a preferred date, inventory, addresses, access notes, and the support you want considered. A moving request and any online figure are informational; final scope, route, price, requirements, availability, and written confirmation determine a confirmed booking.

Planning prompts

A student move-out request should answer practical questions, not guess at the final plan.

Students, parents, and roommates can use the same checklist. The value is in recording what is known and highlighting what must be confirmed before a date, storage arrangement, route, price, or service can be treated as final.

  • Move-out date, building/dorm instructions, and time window
  • Origin and destination address with access information
  • Room-by-room inventory and notes on fragile or unusual items
  • Elevator, stair, loading, parking, and hallway conditions
  • COI or building-document instructions received from management
  • Packing, storage-coordination, New York intrastate long-distance, or time-sensitive needs for review

Timing

Use the actual move-out, move-in, access, and preferred dates. A request can explain timing but does not make any date a confirmed booking.

Inventory

A specific item list helps distinguish ordinary boxes from furniture, electronics, fragile belongings, and unusual pieces that may need more context.

Confirmation

Final scope, route, building requirements, price, availability, arrangements, and written confirmation are reviewed before moving services are scheduled.
